Sohrab Crews was born in London in 1978, spending his first years in Zomba and Lilongwe (Malawi), moving to Bath, England when he was six. Crews has also lived in Qatar, Berlin and Taos in New Mexico. Since 1997 Crews has lived in London, completing a BA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art in 2001.

The artist’s multi-disciplinary practice manifests recurrent themes of order and control, structure, colour and intensity, notably through his ongoing experimentation with the variables of painting, drawing, and sculpture. In 2007 Crews started to employ second-hand walking sticks in his work, both physically and through a variety of representational means. These multi-referential, iconic objects appear in over thirty of the artist’s substantial paintings and sculptures, as well as within many improvisational drawings.

In 2012 Crews joined the alternative master’s course Alt Mfa (London) and published his first book, Extra Life, the following year. This limited edition publication presents twenty-five detailed monochromatic drawings from an ongoing series, supplemented with an essay and interview with the artist, both by Paul Carey-Kent.

In May 2015, as part of an Alt MFA’s residency Crews presented a range of drawings at Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects in East London. During November 2016-January 2017 Crews exhibited a display of drawings and material research at Chelsea College of Arts Library; and in October 2017 he will hold his second solo exhibition at the Westminster Reference Library, Leicester Square, London.
